On this, their second album, they additionally demonstrate an uncommon bravery as arrangers, bringing in,for example, an unusual textural counterpart to the acoustic guitarcornet, courtesy virtuoso Olu Darato lend a dark, noir-ish undercurrent to thesorrowful ballad "Junkie Song" (Dara's also on the more upbeat, celebratory "Horses"). The Tanyas (who took their memorable, ifslightly unwieldy, name from Canadian roots musician Obo Martin's song"Be Good Tanya") harmonize angelically, like siblings who grew upwarbling standards round the family hearth, and their knack for injectingmood and space into what are essentially simple country-tinged folk tunes bringsto mind some of Emmylou Harris' best work. Like a glitzed-down, more bluegrass-inclined Dixie Chicks with a maple leafbackdrop replacing the stars n' bars, this all-femme Vancouver triohas talent and personality to spare.
